Difficult Airway Management

Better Decisions Under Adverse Conditions.

Description: Rapid and effective airway management is critical for good patient outcomes, but patient presentation, field conditions, and other limitations can sometimes present tremendous challenges. With practical methods to rapidly identify, assess and overcome difficult airway conditions with new tricks, tools, and techniques, along with innovative ways to use the tools that we already have, never again should you have that “if only…” feeling after a difficult airway situation. This program utilizes the latest research, practice, and expert opinion in prehospital airway management to provide responders of all levels with what they need to collaborate in overcoming difficult airway emergencies.

  • Best practices in assessment and anticipation of difficult airway situations.
  • The “BE MAGIC” process for endotracheal intubation
  • The use of new equipment and techniques in difficult airway management.
  • Basic and intermediate airway management tools and techniques as both stand-alone preparatory procedures for ALS airways.
  • The roles and responsibilities of the BLS provider in the use of ALS airway tools and techniques.

Advanced Practices for Basic Ventilations

More effective uses for fundamental tools.

Description: Squeezing a bag valve mask may be considered a “basic skill,” but there’s nothing “basic” about patient ventilation. How does elevating a patient’s head make a difference? Should you use a nasal cannula on the patient under the mask? How long is the delay between desaturation and a drop in SpO2 reading? What tools and techniques lead to improved patient outcomes? Which “tips and tricks” actually work in the field? This session looks at the latest prehospital research on oxygenation and ventilation and uses it to expand the emergency care toolbox for all attendees, regardless of practice level.

Learning objectives

  • Describe normal ventilation and gas exchange in the lungs and in the tissues.
  • Identify the problems that a variety of traumatic injuries and medical conditions present to normal gas exchange physiology.
  • Prioritize prehospital airway, breathing, and circulation tools and techniques to improve effective gas exchange based on patient condition and environment as well as their immediate and near-future needs.
  • Apply the “elevate and oxygenate” technique for patients under either/both BLS and ALS care.
